Dog Chews

WHY GIVE YOUR DOG SOMETHING TO CHEW?

Through many years of dog ownership and training I have experienced the benefits of providing a dog with something to chew at the appropriate time. I have coupled my experience with personal research and have broken down the benefits of chewing into the following:

1) PROMOTING DENTAL HEALTH

Chewing is an excellent workout for your dog's jaw, teeth and gums. Regular chewing can substantially reduce plaque build up and malodorous breath; ensuring that your K9's canines remain healthy and strong.

2) COMBATTING STRESS AND ANXIETY

Just like us, your dog can experience moments of stress and anxiety - one way they can cope with this is through chewing, which will release endorphins to help calm and relax them until the stressor has passed.

3) CHANNELING THEIR ENERGY

Have you ever walked your dog and brought them home only to find they still have a boundless source of energy? Chewing can be an effective way of burning off some of this excess! It allows your dog to focus their attention and expend some of their reserves.

4) SPOT POTENTIAL HEALTH CONCERNS

The way your dog chews can give you an early warning sign that your companion has an underlying issue that may need further investigation from your veterinary team. If the way they chew changes or they become suddenly disinterested then it can indicate an underlying health issue. You should always observe your dog's chewing as they might be trying to tell you something

5) PUPPY STEPS

Chewing is one of the ways that a puppy will explore their environment and learn about their new and exciting world. Providing the appropriate size and strength of chew can help satisfy a puppies innate sense of curiosity and let them learn about different tastes and textures.

WHAT IS AN APPROPRIATE CHEW FOR MY DOG?

The size and hardness of the chew is dictated to by your dog so you should observe your Canine Companion's chewing before selecting a treat to satisfy their needs. The below are a few things you can consider when choosing what is right for your dog:

1. Consider your dog's chewing style:

  • Aggressive Chewers: Durable chews like antlers and bully sticks (pizzles) can be ideal.
  • Moderate Chewers: Dental chews, pig ears, and rubber toys work well.
  • Light Chewers: Soft chews like jerky treats and softer rawhide are suitable.

2. Size and Breed

Choose chews that are appropriate for your dog’s size and breed. Small dogs may struggle with large chews, while large dogs can break and swallow small chews, posing a choking risk.

3. Health and Dietary Needs:

Consider any dietary restrictions or health conditions your dog may have. For example, low-fat chews are better for overweight dogs, and hypoallergenic chews are suitable for dogs with food allergies.

4. Safety:

Always supervise your dog while they are chewing to prevent choking or ingestion of large pieces. Choose high-quality, natural chews without artificial additives.
